fresh air: Jayy Perry – “Speedin”

Jayy Perry is an artist that I discovered through a recent Miami trip. Her song was played quite frequently on WEDR 99 Jamz, South Florida’s hip hop and r&b station. I love the atmosphere of the song and the allover production and performance of the record. Great song for everyone who’s into contemporary r&b, I’m curious to see if Jayy Perry can follow up with more good material.

Reminisce.

I remember standing in the little cd store in the basement of the world trade center with my mom as a kid. I thought the store sucked even though they had some rap records but the whole financial district in general felt boring and cold to me, I never liked that part of Manhattan too much. My mom asked me if I wanted to join her going to the roof. I declined and decided to sleep a little longer the next day. Now I regret never going to the top of the WTC and I feel awkwardly

proud to have been inside this building at least once. It’s just a building, I know…

I remember sitting in our little office in Wallst (Frankfurt!) on 9/11 2001 when my man Chubby came in, turned on the tv and said: “Guys you gotta see this”. B.A. and me were in shock, I had to leave shortly after but I stayed on the phone while driving in the car to get the latest news. I didnt take my eyes off the tv for the next 20 hours I guess.

I remember getting out of the subway in late September/early October 2001 on Penn Station, NY and see all these pictures of people that were still missed. They put up a little wooden wall, at least 30 feet long, that was completely covered with pictures of missed people. There were some letters, flowers and hand-painted hearts but the whole wall was 90% just faces of people and a little info on the side, a name and an address or a number to call. As far as I can remember there were walls like this one in many New York subway stations.

I remember sitting in the little East Harlem apt that my man Julio owned, he used to let me stay in his guest room when I was in town. He told me these crazy stories about dust-covered firefighters that came into a nearby Starbucks and asked for water and the clerk had the nerves to charge them a dollar per bottle. Whether actually true or not, this story is proof of how fragile and shocked New York life was at this very moment, how insecure this tough city became and how visible the own vulnerability all of a sudden was. What the television couldn’t report however, is the smell that was in the city for a good week. The smell of dust and debris, burned hair, burned flesh and more and more: dead people. That’s by far the most shocking part Julio had to share.

Rasul feat. DJ Kitsune “Self Titled”

A little more than a year after the release of Ali Rasul’s final album “Writing Colours” we are proud to present to you the video to many people’s favorite song on the album: “Self Titled”. The video was done by german director Grégory Weisert and features a lot of old behind the scenes and studio footage that we gathered while Rasul worked on the two “Opium” albums, but if you’re an old Square One fan, you’ll discover plenty of scenes from former Square One videos that you may know as well. Crada composed and produced the music, while DJ Kitsune added some scratches to fulfill Rasul’s musical vision of the song.

Thanks to
René @ SureShot/Showdown Records for allowing us to use the old Square One material and providing the tapes.
Rolf aka Crack Hagen for digging up all of the backstage tapes and old home video recordings.
Jong @ Starting Lineup for organizing the video director.
Grégory Weisert for putting together a nice piece of work that matches our ideas and wishes.

Trey Songz & DJ Kitsune “Bars & Hooks”

Here’s something brand new that I’m extremely proud of. In association with Trey Songz, Atlantic Records and SureShot Promotions we put together this mixtape showcasing all of Trey’s big features, guest appearances and collaborations. “Bars & Hooks” includes the latest tracks like “I Don’t Care’ with Waka Flocka Flame and goes all the way back to “Summer With Miami” with Jim Jones. On top of that, it’s not only hosted by Trey but he also talks about his relationship with hip hop and rap music and tells the little stories behind all the feature songs he did.

The DJ Survey with DJ A-Les

I haven’t found the time to upload this little treat here earlier, but it’s finally here and I know you’re gonna enjoy this… DJ A-Les is a highly talented kid from Munich, Germany and also a fellow BSTN Soundsystem member. One day I asked him if he wanted to play a little guest set on my weekly radio endeavour and he immediately got behind the turntables to knock out this treat for you guys. Enjoy the dl after the jump. Of course I made him fill out the DJ Survey as well – here’s what A-Les had to say:

DJ Kitsune presents THE DJ SURVEY with:
DJ A-LES (BSTN SOUNDSYSTEM)

I dj, because … I think it’s about time someone teaches people what good music is and especially what it’s about. Don’t flow with the river, flow against it and prove others wrong.

When you come to one of my parties, you’re definitely going to …
Freak Out!

My first record was …
Wu Tang “36 Chambers”

I hate songs that …
get on my damn nerves. For instance, some lame ass remixes with David Guetta, and I’m sick of all these hipsters.

The wildest music request I ever got was …
„Jürgen Drews – Ich bin der König von Mallorca“ True Story!

The best party I ever played was …
yeah well, the thing about good partys is that, you just can’t remember them. Although, the best party I ever played at, was here in Munich – BSTN.

The most expensive record I ever bought …
“Watch The Throne (Deluxe Set)”

When I dj, you better don’t …
don’t mess with my shit

When I travel, I usually …
take the train and come too late.

My first club gig was …
in 2008.

When I get out of the club, all I wanna do is …
eat and watch tv.

I have all of my vinyl …
in my bedroom.

I would never play …
other music for more money. Read more…
